Something else I ran across in Nikolai-Eck during my visit to Leipzig, were Glückskäfer nesting toys. These are beautiful, German produced, heirloom quality, wooden nesting puzzles. Glückskäfer has been in business for over 60 years and believes in producing quality over quantity. For German speakers, they’re available from the Glückskäfer website in Germany. They’re also available from Fine Wooden Toys in the US, and Laughing Bear Toys in the UK.

I love a lot of toys by a German (?) company called Haba. We have an animal stacking game (Tier auf Tier?), some lunique plastic cars with rubber wheels, and a wooden gem rattle — that was later recalled. But the best part of that was the personal e-mail we got notifying us of the recall. The Haba company has some cool stuff that I don’t typically see made by US toymakers. It is sold by The Children’s Store in Chapel Hill.
I should write more about Haba. They’re one of the “regular” toy companies here, so I don’t think about it. Their toys are great though.
I adore Haba toys. I wanted to bring a whole suitcase full when we moved back to the USA but that wasn’t exactly in the budget.
